The Fire Department is seeking approval to move forward with the purchase of 60 Scott 5.5 Air-Pak X3 Pro air packs and cylinders. This purchase will replace the Department's current SCBA air packs which are ten years old, no longer under warranty and are currently two standards behind the latest NFPA standards. The new SCBA equipment will meet current NFPA standards and have several additional features designed to improve firefighter safety - improved low air alarm, universal connections for buddy breathing, and the ability for all soft components to be properly decontaminated to reduce the risk of cancer in our firefighters.
The air packs will be purchased through NPPGov, a nationwide government joint purchasing program service for local governments. The current SCBA contract was awarded to Municipal Emergency Services (MES). MES is the only Scott air pack dealer and service center in northern Illinois.
The total cost of 60 new air packs is $455,148. The approved 2019 budget includes $373,000 (401-3501-572-5015 EQ9502) for the replacement of the Fire Departments' SCBA equipment with the additional funds coming from Foreign Firefighter Tax Fund $82,184.00 (227-3501-572-5010).
