The Illinois Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Safety Programs and Engineering promotes the Saved by the Belt Award to increase awareness of the lifesaving value of seat belts and car seats. By publicly recognizing individuals who survived traffic crashes because they were properly belted or restrained in a car seat, the Saved by the Belt award reinforces the importance of buckling up.
On August 25, 2022, Arlington Heights resident, Andrew Martin, was traveling south bound on Arlington Heights Road approaching Hintz Road when a full-size pickup truck abruptly turned left in front of his minivan. Mr. Martin was unable to avoid the unanticipated hazard, which resulted in a significant traffic collision. Because Mr. Martin made a conscience decision to properly wear his seat belt it saved him from suffering major injury or possible death as result of the crash.
The Village of Arlington Heights and Police Department would like to present the Saved by the Belt Award to Mr. Martin. His action serves as a reminder of how wearing a seat belt reduces injuries and save lives.
