Item: Saved by the Helmet Award 2022
Department: Police

The Illinois Department of Transportation’s Bureau Cycle Rider Safety Training Program promotes the Saved by the Helmet Award to increase awareness and importance of motorcycle helmets as a lifesaving strategy. By publicly recognizing individuals who survived traffic crashes because they properly wore a DOT certified helmet while riding, the Saved by the Helmet Award reinforces the importance of responsible motorcycle riding.

On September 20th, 2022, a local Des Plaines resident, Ariana Ray, was riding her motorcycle northbound on Arlington Heights Road approaching White Oak.  Ms. Ray saw a vehicle abruptly turn right on red from White Oak to northbound Arlington Heights Road entering her lane of travel.  Ms. Ray attempted to quickly avoid the imminent impact with a larger, heavier vehicle. During the evasive maneuvers, the motorcycle fell onto its side, placing Ms. Ray in direct and sudden contact with the pavement. The DOT approved helmet she was wearing at the time sustained significant damage upon impacting and sliding on the roadway. Without the protection of the helmet, Ms. Ray could have sustained severe head injuries or worse.

The Village of Arlington Heights and Police Department would like to present the Saved by the Helmet Award to Ms. Ray. While wearing a helmet is a choice, her story is an example of how unexpected situations can occur. However, wearing an approved helmet can undoubtedly reduce injuries or even save a life.
