BACKGROUND
The Cook County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) was developed to prepare for specified natural hazards while responding to federal mandates set forth in the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000.
Adoption of the HMP will facilitate eligibility for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) hazard mitigation funding. Upon adoption of Volume 1 and the VAH annex of Volume 2 of the HMP and subsequent approval by FEMA and Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), the Village will be able to apply for specified grant funding for long-term hazard mitigation measures specified in the Village’s annex either before or after a disaster declaration.
The Arlington Heights Public Works and Engineering Departments have several ongoing flood hazard mitigation projects that require, and will continue to require, significant funding. While the dollar amount of any grants available varies and must be shared with other participating jurisdictions, only those communities which have adopted the plan by resolution will be allowed to apply for grants or reimbursements.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the Village Board adopt the attached Resolution Authorizing the Adoption of the Cook County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan.
