| | The 2024 Capital Improvement Plan allocates $100,000 to purchase a portable salt conveyor. The conveyor will maximize salt storage within the Village's salt dome by allowing Public Works staff to load the salt higher than current procedures allow. Currently, salt is loaded into the dome with a front-end loader, which limits the ability to maximize storage in the dome.
Utilizing the portable salt conveyor will enable Public Works to store an additional 500 tons of material, bringing the salt dome's total capacity to 5,000 tons. This increased storage capacity ensures the Village has ample salt to handle severe winter weather conditions. Furthermore, the portable salt conveyor will allow for much faster and safer loading of the salt dome, significantly reducing the staff time dedicated to this task. This improvement will enhance operational efficiency and free Public Works staff to focus on other winter maintenance activities.
On July 1st, 2024, the Village held a public bid opening for the portable salt conveyor. The Village's Purchasing Coordinator publicly opened and read aloud one bid. The bid price is listed below.
KIMCO USA Inc. $134,633.39
Public Works staff has previously rented conveyors from KIMCO USA, Inc., of Marshall, Illinois, and was satisfied with their equipment's performance. Though the bid price is higher than the budgeted allocation, the Public Works Capital Operational Fund (401-7101-550150 EQ9401) can accommodate the overage due to projected savings on future purchases.
