Item: Emergency Repairs to Fire Department - Engine (Unit #415)
Department: Public Works

BACKGROUND

During a routine response, the Fire Department's 1997 Pierce Engine (Unit #415) experienced a transmission failure and had to be towed in for diagnosis. The report came back, verified by our Fleet Unit, that the transmission has failed and needs replacement.  Interstate Power Systems is our local Allison dealer (manufacturer of transmission) and provided an estimate of $18,136.96 for full transmission replacement.

Unit #415 is a reserve engine used to back up Fire Stations No. 2 and No. 4.  It is also used as a primary when the front line units are having maintenance repairs.  It is considered a critical piece of equipment and needs to be repaired as soon as possible.

Staff has had previous experience with Interstate Power Systems and recommends approval.

RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended that the Village Board waive competitive bids and approve the proposal from Interstate Power Systems of Carol Stream, IL for emergency repairs to Engine (Unit #415) in an amount not-to-exceed $18,136.96, and approve a budget amendment in the amount of $4,000 using existing reserves from the Fleet Operating Contingency fund 621-7501-551-4096 to increase the budget for account 621-7501-551.21-07.
