BACKGROUND
An inquiry from a resident in the neighborhood near Camelot Park suggested additional traffic control at the relocated entrance into the new Community Center. Specifically with the aligned entrance of the remodeled facility aligning with Stuart Drive at the intersection of Suffield Drive, the possibility of placing all way stop signs was requested.
The Village has reviewed the intersection and while the traffic counts would not approach the values that would indicate the need for an all way stop sign, the following factors do suggest that this traffic control could be beneficial:
- The current sight distance is limited on the northwest and northeast corners by significant tree and shrub growth.
- The intersection is the main entrance to the new community center. In addition to vehicle traffic, pedestrians crossing at this location would be aided if traffic were required to stop.
- The Village would be following up with additional paint striping for crosswalks, and if the stop signs are placed, they would be supplemented with painted stop bars.
- Before the driveway into the site was aligned with Stuart Drive there were no accidents at this location, and none have occurred since the new facility has opened.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the Village Board approve the attached Ordinance designating the intersection of Stuart Drive and Suffield Drive as a 3-way stop intersection for east and west bound Suffield Drive to stop for Stuart Drive, and for southbound Stuart Drive to stop for Suffield Drive .
