Item Coversheet

Item: Ordinance - Code Amendment - Chapter 27
Department: Building/Legal

BACKGROUND

The Building Services Department is initiating a new program that will utilize an outside, web-based service to help ensure that testing for fire alarm systems throughout the Village is taking place as required by the Fire Code. The process will reduce the administrative burden to Village Staff and will help ensure timely compliance with our fire codes. There is no cost to the Village to utilize this service, as it is supported by small fees charged directly to the testing companies that are hired by local businesses to keep their systems Code-compliant.

As a result of this new process, a Code amendment is required. The attached ordinance amends the Village Code to provide the requirement that proof of fire systems’ periodic testing (testing that is already required by the Fire Code) shall be submitted in a manner set forth by the Village. Once this Code amendment is passed, it is anticipated that the Village will enter into a contract with a company that will be responsible for collecting, organizing and categorizing the inspection reports via a web-based system.

RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended that the Village Board adopt the attached Ordinance Amending Chapter 27 of the Arlington Heights Municipal Code.
