The approved FY 2017 capital budget includes $750,000 for the replacement of one fire engine. The Fire Department is seeking approval to move forward with the purchase of a 2017 Pierce Velocity fire engine, a 750-gallon, 2,000 gpm pumper. This fire engine will replace a 1997 Pierce Quantum 1500 gpm pumper, which will be sold when the new engine is delivered. The new engine will have several features designed to reduce injury, e.g., reduced cab and step-in height; lowered hose beds; increased cabinet accessibility.
The engine will be purchased through the CO-OP Helping Governments Across the Country Buy (HGACBuy), a nationwide government procurement service. HGACBuy offers a joint purchasing program and bidding services to local governments and has a fire service apparatus contract with Pierce Manufacturing of Appleton, Wisconsin, the manufacturer of all the department’s fire apparatus. We will receive a discount of $23,220 for pre-paying 100%, bringing the total cost of the engine to $680,028. Also, by completing the order prior to February 1, 2017, we will avoid the manufacturer’s 3% price increase. A performance bond will be issued by the manufacturer to insure that the specifications and performance requirements for the new fire engine are met.
